2.6 Instructional Design
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design when designing and developing digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences. (PSC 2.6/ISTE 2f)
Artifact: Lesson Plan
Reflection:
The lesson plan for implementing the National Education Technology Standards for students was an artifact that was completed as an individual classroom assignment. The plan included both content and technology standards, an overview of the assignment, essential questions, an assessment, resources used, an instructional plan, preparation needing to occur prior to taking action, management strategies, troubleshooting strategies, instructional strategies and learning activities, incorporation of Bloom’s Taxonomy, differentiation, extensions and enrichment, assistive technologies, and a reflection. For the lesson, students are expected to use a blog to document their process and learning throughout the duration of preparing for the wax museum and to create a multimedia presentation about their historical characters of choice.
Research-based best practices were embedded throughout the instructional design of the lesson plan, which included essential questions, backwards design through the creation of assessments first, activating prior knowledge, digital citizenship practices and modeling, activating strategies, teaching strategies, summarizing strategies, the incorporation of meaningful technologies, assistive technologies, differentiated through content and process, extensions for enrichment, and reflection for students and teachers involved. Digital tools and resources were included in the plan, which added to the technology-enhanced learning experience. An outline and checklist for the project were also given to students to keep them on track with their progress and learning, which is a best practice used as well.
The plan was well thought out and planned, as troubleshooting predictions and management strategies for students and learning were also included. I modeled and facilitated the plan both as a teacher to my students in my classroom and as a teacher leader to the staff at my school. The results of the lesson plan were successful, and my students gained knowledge throughout the technology-enriched lesson.
I learned the importance of planning strategically during this assignment and to plan for different possibilities that may occur during the execution of a lesson, especially when involving technology. To improve this lesson plan, I would break up the information into different days of teaching it to students; this would make the lesson more user friendly for other teachers who may need more detailed instruction. I would also include the website I created for my multimedia design project, which can be found at http://designyourproject.weebly.com. The website has a plethora of information that could be added to the resources used within the lesson plan.
The artifact impacted school improvement through designing the lesson plan and modeling how it was used in my gifted classroom. The faculty developed newfound knowledge in using student blogs for students to document their progress in learning standards and completing a project as well as learning how to encourage students to show their learning through the use of multimedia presentations. The impact of the lesson can be assessed through the multimedia projects created as well as the student blog entries.
