Artifact: Data Overview and Action Plan
Reflection:
The purpose of the data overview assignment was to collect and analyze student achievement data over at least a three-year time period in order to illustrate a school’s story through the findings, in order to find strengths, weaknesses, trends, and areas to focus on for improvement. The overview was to act as a guide to creating an action plan to increase and maximize student learning. Although the assignment was articulated through an individual effort, I used many resources at my school in order to complete the project.
The second artifact to support my learning in the area of data analysis is the action plan that followed the data overview assignment. Like the overview, this assignment was completed on an individual basis. It identified the focused goals and research-based interventions to address the weaknesses found within the data analysis.
For the project, I created a Prezi with audio to explain the findings of data. The collection of data was clearly shown through multiple and different types of data charts. The analysis of student achievement was illustrated through the audio during the presentation. I collected and analyzed four years of data at Midway Elementary School, which included student enrollment numbers, ethnicity data, special services, student family characteristics, school personnel, CCRPI numbers, and student achievement (through CRCT and Georgia Milestone data in Reading/ELA and Mathematics). During the Prezi, I interpreted the results found during the project and communicated the findings efficiently. Based on the findings, I noted strengths and focused on weaknesses found. Questions were asked in order to create a plan needed to improve instructional practices and maximize student learning.
Once the weaknesses were identified, I created an action plan for the identified student learning goals. The action plan focused on research-based interventions, the detailed actions needing to take place during the strategies, person responsible and deadline for completing, a list of resources and budget, expected outcomes, monitoring and assessment tools, and person responsible for monitoring the results. The outlined interventions in the action plan were specifically designed to improve instructional practices in order to maximize student learning. A maintenance plan to analyze the consistency of the results over a period of time was included in the plan as well; tweaking of the plan would take place if needed during the process.
I learned a lot during both projects. For the data overview, I learned how to collect and analyze data over a period of time, identify strengths, weaknesses, and trends, analyze the results found, communicate the findings, and create a plan of action to address the results that were found. To change the data overview, I would add more updated information to the current findings. During the course of writing the action plan, I learned the importance of choosing the best researched-based strategies to use, creating a purposeful and strategic budget, and how to predict outcomes. If I could change anything about the action plan, I would pinpoint the exact amount of money being spent (instead of estimating for each of the actions).
After the data overview was created, I shared the results with some of the staff members at my school. They were enlightened by the findings and excited to be a part of the analysis. Student learning was enhanced by the action plan derived from the data overview findings. The impact can be assessed through continuous analysis and monitoring of the results of the action plan as well as a new analysis of assessment results once available.
