Artifact: Podcasts, Visual Tools, and Differentiation Blog Post
Reflection:
The artifact I’m using to demonstrate my knowledge and growth in the area of diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness is a blog post titled, “Podcasting, Visual Tools, and Differentiation.” This assignment was completed individually and challenged me to share information I had learned about different digital tools and resources to use in the classroom. Using these tools during differentiated instruction was also a focus of the assignment.
The blog entry discussed podcasting as a digital tool and resource to use in the classroom, with the ultimate goal of increasing global awareness and cultural understanding. Not only did I focus on how podcasting can help teachers and students connect globally and sharpen our cultural awareness, I explained in the entry how diverse learning needs could be met through the use of podcasting. With examples such as the option to have multiple versions of directions for student assignments and capabilities of listening to instruction numerous times, diverse learning needs could be met in any classroom. Learning about podcasts helped me open up to new possibilities in my classroom; sharing my newfound information with others hopefully did the same for those who read it.
Using visual tools is a common instructional practice I currently use and have used in each of the classrooms I have taught; however, I learned about new visual tools for the sake of my blog entry. Learning about new visual digital tools and resources to use in my classroom was a benefit to both my students and teaching practices. These types of tools are excellent to use for differentiating for diverse learning needs as well, not only to help students learn but also through student products. Many visual digital tools can also be used to connect with others globally and increase cultural awareness through web services as well. Although my students live in southeastern Georgia and often are not exposed to many resources that are available in larger cities; however, the use of technology allows opportunities for students to take virtual field trips and connect with others they may have not had the chance to do otherwise.
During this assignment, I learned the importance of always challenging myself as a teacher to learn more. Exposure to new tools is essential for today’s classroom for both teachers and students. If I could change anything about this assignment, I would add more tools and ways to connect with others through those tools.
Because the blog is shared with others as well as the resources, I impacted school improvement and faculty development in a positive way; these are great tools for teachers and students to learn how to use. The impact of these tools can be assessed through lesson plans, surveys, and observations.
