3.1 Classroom Management & Collaborative Learning
Candidates model and facilitate effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies to maximize teacher and student use of digital tools and resources. (PSC 3.1/ISTE 3a)
Artifact: Lesson Plan
Reflection:
The lesson plan was an individual assignment that focused on incorporating National Education Technology Standards for Students and content standards both seamlessly and with purpose. In addition to incorporating both content and technology standards, the plan gave an overview of the assignment, stated essential questions, discussed assessments, listed resources and digital tools used, outlined an instructional plan and the preparation to execute the plan, included management strategies, encouraged collaborative learning strategies, and included many other key elements needed for a successful lesson plan. For the lesson, students learned how to use a student blog to document their progress and learning throughout their preparation for the annual wax museum as well as to create a multimedia presentation about their historical characters of choice. Podcasts were created by the students to share on the student blogs as well.
Different types of management strategies were embedded within the lesson plan. Student management was addressed by including a seating chart based on the presentation tools that were being used to create the multimedia presentations. Although the products students were created were expected to occur on an individual basis, students using the same digital tool sat in close proximity with one another to encourage collaborative learning strategies; the close proximity allowed students to work together, ask questions about their specific digital tools, and provide feedback as well.
Learning management strategies were addressed through small flip charts for students to show the stage in which they were working, and students were give a checklist and outline to keep them on track while self-monitoring their progress. The flip charts also included different colors to signal to me if they needed help or if students surrounding them needed to keep their noise levels down due to recording a podcast.
All of the students involved had previous training in digital citizenship in the computer-lab setting; general rules and reminders were posted in the classroom to remind students of the concepts they learned. Possible troubleshooting that may occur was thought out and prepared for, in case it was needed. All of the management strategies used throughout the plan deemed a successful lesson and allowed my students and me to maximize our use of the digital tools and resources used in the lesson.
I learned the importance of preparing for lessons by including various management strategies within them. When organizing students and supervising them during lessons, it’s essential to have things in order to maximize teaching and learning time. If I could do anything differently, I would have a small confined space in the classroom so students could record their podcasts without distractions. Although I did allow students to go to a nearby conference room visible to my classroom, many of them needed to record at the same time as others. Using earbuds with a microphone could possibly help as well, in order to dim background noises in the recordings.
The artifact positively impacted school improvement through the modeling and use of proper management techniques used throughout the lesson. Teachers observed students working in a technology-enriched environment and saw the positive effects of digital tool management with a group of students. The impact of the lesson can be measured through the multimedia projects, student blogs, and podcasts that were created as a result of the lesson.
