3.2 Managing Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences. (PSC 3.2/ISTE 3b)
Artifact: The Google Times Video
Reflection:
The video titled “The Google Times” was created as an individual assignment. The purpose of the assignment was to share a technology with others who were also in the ITEC 8500 course at the time. I created a video using the digital tools Adobe Premiere, Prezi, and Screencast-O-Matic. The video introduces Google Apps for Education and focuses on how Google Classroom can be used as a management tool in any classroom as well as to enhance student learning experiences. I narrated the video as well.
This artifact clearly shows my knowledge and effectiveness in managing digital tools and resources, such as Google Classroom and Google Drive, in order to improve student learning experiences in my classroom. The video starts by explaining the importance of shifting one’s mindset to use new and innovative digital tools within classrooms of all grades and disciplines and is backed up by research. A general description and examples of GAFE is introduced. Discussing the ease of using Google tools together is discussed and demonstrated throughout the video. The meat of the video discusses both the teacher and student views of Google Classroom and the different functionalities in how it can be used. In addition, real-life images and a walk-through of the management tool is shown and established within context. Ways to use Google Classroom for student management as well as learning management is also confirmed. The tool clearly shows the benefits of using these digital tools to maximize student learning and to protect a teacher’s instructional time.
I learned the importance of creating concrete introductions when pioneering a new tool within a classroom as well as to staff and faculty. When stakeholders get the overall concept of the tool being presented, they seem more willing to learn about the product as well as excited because they have seen the best of what it can do for them and their students. If I were to change anything about this artifact, I would add another chapter for teachers who are more advanced in their knowledge of Google Classroom.
Because the video was shared with the school faculty, school improvement was positively impacted. Teachers began reaching out to me, and I trained several grade levels within the school on setting up their classrooms and ways to use Google Classroom as a student and classwork management system. The impact of the artifact can be assessed by the amount of teachers who are using Google Classroom now as opposed to before the introductory video.
